Los Papines Successfully Perform in Beijing, 5/11/05 Alfredo Abreu: A Great Drummer, 11/1/02 - Radio Havana on the 1st anniversary of Alfredo's death Schedule Discography |
Los PapinesBased in Habana, los Papines is one of Cuba's top rumba bands. From an announcement by La Peña Cultural Center in Berkeley: "Los Papines are a world-renowned master percussion
quartet. Their spontaneity combined with their African sounds make their concert an
experience full of rhythm, energy and pleasure. But what makes them different is their way
of playing the drums or golpe de cuero y canto giving the public a taste of the original
rumba cubana. They are also known as The Kings of Rumba. |
| Beijing.- Famous Cuban outfit Los Papines closed the International Festival of Pop Music, organized in thuis city by the government of the Chaoyang district. The quintet, made up of the three Abreu brothers and two of their sons, drummed to the rhythm of the furiously-paced Caribbean rumba throughout the week, in an open space always packed by the audience. The forty-year plus career of Los Papines never included China before, despite the hundreds of shows they have played on all continents. The initial uncertainty due to the possible cultural shock was swiftly dispersed by the warm welcome of the audience, who immediately identified with the music, incessantly repeated the catchy lines and applauded every song. Los Papines will start a tour of the provinces on Saturday, which will take them to the city of Wuxi, in the eastern province of Jiangsu, and afterwards to Changchun, administrative center of the province of Jilin, northeast China. Winner of many awards in their long career, the group continues its string of successes and this year joined the list of Egrem Award laureates, granted by the main Cuban recording company, for best selling album "Los Papines siguen OK." |

October 29th marks the first anniversary of the death of Alfredo Abreu. Perhaps many people in the world are not familiar with this name, but if I say he was a member of the internationally-known percussion quartet Los Papines, then they know who I'm talking about. The Abreu brothers (Ricardo -- known as Papin and leader of the group -- Luis, Jesus and Alfredo) formed their quartet in 1957 and from then on they were the ambassadors of Cuban culture in over 40 nations. Throughout their always-successful career, the mythical artists stood out on many stages, recorded a large number of albums and won countless prizes. Los Papines, with their voices, their drums and their Afro-Cuban rhythms and rumba, are part of our cultural identity, the soul of Cuban percussion. On October 30th, 2001, Alfredo was buried at Havana's Colon Cemetery. Top Cuban composer Cesar Portillo de la Luz gave the eulogy. Hundreds of people -- relatives, friends, admirers and fellow artists -- paid their last respects. Culture Minister Abel Prieto was at the burial. On that day, the island's drums played louder than ever and Cuba sang a requiem for the great drummer. |

vengo en busca de la niña
que ayer tarde se enfermó,
porque el maldito de Manolo
me le ha dado quimbombó
eso no lo aguanto yo
porque no me da la gana
le tiro la palangana
y me como el quimbombó
