Teresita Dome Pérez

Teresita hails from Matanzas, where many of her Villamil relatives are well-known members of groups such as Los Muñequitos and Afrocuba.  She is the former prima balerina for Afrocuba de Matanzas

Born in Matanzas, Teresita Pérez grew up amidst one of the richest folkloric communities in Cuba. In recognition of her talent and dedication to her art she was asked to join the world-renowned Grupo Afrocuba de Matanzas in 1982 at the age of 17.

Since then, she has performed and toured with Afrocuba in capacities ranging from ensemble member to principal dancer and educator and has earned awards and commendations for her work both in Cuba and abroad. Her other accomplishments include participating in the Festival de Caribe in Santiago de Cuba, the Fiesta de Rumba y Tambor, and the Havana Jazz Festival. In 1986 she traveled to Angola, West Africa with Afrocuba and was invited to participate in the Banff Centre for the Arts Afrocubanismo Festival  in Banff, Canada.

Teresita is dedicated to preserving the integrity of these artistic forms as well as presenting a contemporary perspective. She brings to her work an infectious spirit and a high degree of energy.

AFROCUBAN DANCE CLASS! Winter/Spring 2003

Afro Cuban Dance in Los Angeles on Tuesdays, 8-9:30 pm at Lula Washingtonh Dance Theater, 5041 W. Pico Blvd., Los Angeles 90019. Classes are $12 and include live drumming accompaniment!

First Day Project

The 1st First Day Project, was a U.S. tour for a group of All-Star Afro-Cuban Drummers, Singers and Dancers in 2001.

This incredible group was headed by Jesus Alfonso of Los Munequitos de Matanzas
featuring Miguel Bernal, Jose Barroso, and Susana Arenas of Raices Profundas, and Teresita Perez and Sandy Perez of Afro-Cuba de Matanzas.

Teresita to give classes 4/22/00 in LA

TERESITA PEREZ formerly principal dancer of GRUPO AFROCUBA DE MATANZAS, will be giving a master dance class in AFRO CUBAN FOLKLORE

Teresita grew up with the dance, song and traditions of one of Cuba’s richest folkloric communities. She has toured and taught internationally, and is dedicated to perserving the integrity of the artistic forms of the Arará, Yoruba and Congo influences on Cuban culture in their sacred, as well as, popular manifestations.
